Dear mysterious Secret Santa from Canada,

Thank you for the beautiful warm fuzzy corner hammock and huge pocket hammock. The girls (and I!) are thrilled - they're breaking in the pocket hammock right now. They'll be cozy and warm all winter.

Also, for the cute rattie note paper and adorable card!

Fandom: TRANSFORMERS

Pairing: none
Length: approx. 827 words
Author on LJ: [info]saesama
Author website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:

Kick in the Head / Glances Into a Spark is one of those epic serial WIPs that are strangely prevalent in this fandom. Twin-a-Twim is one of my favorite pieces of it.

Fans had a mini-meltdown during ROTF when a silver (not red!) Sideswipe appeared without his twin Sunstreaker. The original Autobot twins were replaced by Mudflap and Skids, and Sunstreaker fans were boggled: what happened to the twins?

Saesama answers it beautifully in this short story, and managed to make Mudflap and Skids characters we can empathize with. I would highly recommend all the stories in this series (found via the author's masterlist), but this one can stand alone.

The Substitute by Deinonychus_1 (18)

Fandom: PRIMEVAL
Pairing: Nick/Connor (mentions Nick/Stephen)
Length: 2500
Author on LJ: [info]deinonychus_1
Author Website: None – see LJ masterlist
Why this must be read:

If you want angst and pretty boys broken, then read [info]deinonychus_1's fic! The Substitute is the beginning of her 'Need' series, which spans series 2 and 3 from the breakdown of Nick's relationship with Stephen to the appearance of Captain Becker. The story stands on its own very well, but if you want to read the others, they're on [info]deinonychus_1's masterlist. Be warned: This is a dark series and not for everyone! But it's a scary and compelling glimpse into the characters' minds. [info]deinonychus_1 gets way beyond Connor as the comedy geek and shows us a bleaker side to him.

Thank you so much for the toys, [info]angii!

The girls love playing in their new tube, and the hammock is great! I have to keep watching Sadie when she plays with that ladder; she keeps trying to get her head stuck, hah! ♥

-

Completely unrelated, but I'm going to try and switch my girls from bedding into a litter pan and fleece. How hard is it generally to litter train? Pretty easy from what I've heard, but my girls are such slobs! And, what type of litter should I be looking for? We use a wheat-based litter for our cats, but I think the rats would much rather eat it than poop in it.

Yay, the crew and I got our package from Texas! ---->

A very pretty hammock
A cute little treat jar with a rat engraved on it!
Treats in the jar (which my little squeaks love)
A little rattie-size dish (the perfect size for my old man Remington)
And a little rattie comb

Thank you!!!

Also p.s. My package was an international one, hoping it got to recipient OK?

my Martins R-690 just arrived!!! I had JUST checked FedEx and found out that it was on the truck to be delivered today... I swear, right when I closed the window, the truck showed up!

aieeeeeeeee!!! *happydance*

now I have a date with my pliers!

I am SOOOO looking forward to having a cage that is easier to clean. When we first got the girls, my husband built a bookshelf cage. We didn't know what we were doing, and several of the design features make it impossible to keep the shelves clean, so... ugh, I decided we needed to cut our losses with that one.

Just got back from the vet with Ianto snorting like a pig. She's on Doxy now for the next 21 days but something bothers me.

The vet said she needs to lose weight (she's 1.5 years old, weighing 366gr = 0.804lb) because added belly fat pressures her lungs. However, nothing in her diet changed between her last checkup three months ago when she weighed 20gr (0.04lb) less. I have no idea what makes her fat: she lives with six other rats in a larg four-stores cage inside a big playpen with tuns of tunnels and a wheel (which they don't use...) and is generally a run-about little girl. They eat TH, a quarter of dried banana and a small piece of Jerhigh dog snack a day. Other than that, they get cucumbers, carrots and apples a week and share amungst themselves one of those rodent canes and that's all the food they get. What do I need to reduce?

TF Continuity: Armada
Pairing: Starscream/Unicron, Starscream/Megatron
Length: about 68,000 words
Author on LJ: [info]i_stalk_piccolo
Author website: on FF.net
Why this must be read:

This has the distinction of being the only Starscream/Unicron fic I have ever heard of, and I will admit that the pairing curiousity drove me to read a story set in a continuity I knew nothing about.

I have no idea how it holds up the actual events of the Armada anime series, but this fanfic is intense. It is dark and inventive and it sucks you in. It starts out disturbing, turns wierd, goes sideways, then upside down. And everything builds to a satisfying whole.

Warning: This story is posted on AFF instead of FF.Net because of the very adult rating. be aware of non-con, abuse, torture ahead when you read

I have a local vet who has been seeing my girls regularly but my oldie just popped up a tumor(?) and I don't really trust him for surgery. I'm aware of the FL Ratlist but I was wondering if there were, specifically, any Florida vets skilled in tumor/mass removal? Maybe even southern Georgia vets because I live in northeast FL.

Also, is the decision of whether or not a rat would have a good chance of surviving surgery one made by the vet?

Thanks for any help.

Knitted TARDIS

  • Dec. 29th, 2009 at 11:35 PM
Hi, everybody!  Long time watcher, first time poster.  Please excuse any mistakes I may make!

Anyway, I have been wanting to knit a TARDIS using the pattern that can be found on the internet.  However, I wanted to get some advice from people who have made one before.  What size needles did you use?  Did you use an intarsia technique for the coloured parts, or did you duplicate stitch it on afterwards?  What size did it turn out to be in the end?

Thanks for all the help!

Pairing: Mentions Jack Carter/Nathan Stark
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [info]kristories
Author Website: [info]kristories
Why this must be read: "For the last time," Nathan bites out. "He is not a Zombie." Restrained on the bed Fargo moans 'braaaaaaaaaiiiiiinssss' and reaches for Nathan.

I began this set of recs with blowing up the entire canon, so the only appropriate way to end it is with another apocalypse. This story is priceless! Zombies in Eureka! It could be an episode! It has the perfect mix of fantasy cliche and skientific explanation! So many lines made me laugh-out-loud, especially:

Nathan stares at him like he's stupid, which, come to think of it, is Nathan's default expression where Jack is involved.

and

"Oh come on, Carter," Nathan says. "It's more of a guideline really. The DOD says 'bad scientist, no lab time', GD says 'but we need to finish project X and the DOD says 'okay fine, but bad scientist, remember we can take away your lab time'".

Have a Happy New Year!

Woman, Wondering by jedibuttercup (K+/PG)

Fandom: EUREKA
Pairing: Allison Blake/Nathan Stark, but no more than in canon
Length: 700 words
Author on LJ: [info]jedibuttercup
Author Website: Jedi Buttercup
Why this must be read: A wonderful character study of Allison:

She knew she'd hurt and confused him in the months leading up to the wedding-that-hadn't-happened; she still wasn't sure how to explain it to him in words that didn't sound selfish and condescending, but in a strange way it had been Jack's strong, supportive nature and unwavering appreciation for her that had given her the confidence to accept Nathan's second proposal. Without his catalyzing presence, she didn't think either she or Nathan would ever have reached a place where they could have made those sorts of promises to each other again, and mean them.

[info]jedibuttercup's writing always shows such an insightful understanding of these characters.

Why this must be read:
It's future!AU, it's smut and it's. So. Fucking. Wonderful.

It's perfect. I lovelovelove how there's no easy fix or quick break, there's no rom com kiss that makes everything alright or angry storming out of the room that causes more drama. It's just... real. Very, very real.

The top/bottom dynamic really worked. It didn't seemed cliché at all, which it often does in Kurt/Puck fics, it slid very easily into the rest of their character traits and what they wanted. Now that I've read them like this (10 years in the future and grown up), it's the only way I can really imagine that they would fit together on a long term basis.

Alternative treatment for tumours?

  • Dec. 29th, 2009 at 8:09 PM
Hey all
I discovered what i originally thought was a cyst (because she had one almost like this on the opposite side of her body) but now I believe it may be a tumour. It is on her right side about one centimeter away from her shoulderblade. It is very hard. It is very small though, but i have noticed some growth.
I'm gonna take her sweet rattie butt to the vet, but in case it is a tumour, has anyone had any luck with "alternative" methods? As in, other than surgery?
Thanks

The Tenth Doctor

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 12:27 AM
There have been some excellent moments for the Tenth Doctor over the past few years and it's a pity we couldn't have had one full season with Tennant under the supervision of Moffat and the new team to see how they take it forward.

But hey ho.

Anyway, the fanboy in me wouldn't let the impending regeneration go by without me drawing and posting up a portrait of the out-going Doctor, and since today is my last day at home before going back to work (albeit for 2 days):

Image ©2009 Bryan Lea

The picture was sketched in pencil, scanned and then worked on in Paint Shop Pro. I could have carried on fiddling, but I wanted to keep some atmosphere to the picture and I have a tendency to over do it if I don't tell myself to stop and stand back...

Hope you like it.
You may or may not remember my picture of the Fourth Doctor as a Lemming from last year. Well, I've started work on the rest of the Doctors now - See if you can guess who's up next.

David Tennant and RTD were on Radio 2 this afternoon talking about Doctor Who. It's available on iPlayer for 7 more days!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00pclt6

There are a few audio clips on there and one in particular from The End Of Time, so I'd advise not to listen if you don't want ANY spoilers at all.

The clip from The End Of Time was pretty slashy. RTD loves this pairing. It's of The Master & The Doctor talking to each other, in very hushed tones. I wrote it down for those who can't tune in to iPlayer. The clip starts at about 13:40.

My buddy Ian took care of my boys while I was out of town for the holidays, which is incredbily sweet of him since he's slightly afraid of them. Last night we were hanging out at my house and I had d'Artagnan on my shoulder. d'Art proceeded to climb down, run along the back of the couch, and climb into Ian's hood.

Awww, look at him cringe!

Ian froze up, smiling nervously, and kept repeating "Tell me if it looks like he'll attack, tell me if it looks like he'll attack..." Then I absolutely had to get out the camera, and the flash startled d'Artagnan, making him jump slightly, which then caused Ian to emit a short scream and me to laugh until I almost pissed myself.

What wonderful friends I have.
