Win some, lose some.

Well, we have a dvd burner for my computer now. This is good.  However, now the sound won't play. Speakers are plugged in, on, computer not muted... but no sound. This is bad.

Doesn't seem to be a software thing (Nero was installed with the dvd rom, but I can't find any conflicts.

Anyone out there have any hints?

I think you need to uninstall and reinstall the sound card. Someting (Nero) might have corrupted the driver.

1. right click on my computer>manage>Device manager>
2. Expand Sound, video, and game controllers
3. right click on your sound card and click 'uninstall'

reboot

4. after you reboot, the card should PnP and the driver should be found as it's already on your system.

Do you know what sound card you have?

Yeah, tried that right after making sure the speakers were ON. No change. :(

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

DVD install instructions said to hook up the audio cable, but I couldn't find it. We don't have a separate sound card; it's just the onboard one from the motherboard. :(

But the inside of the box is spaghetti, so maybe I just missed it. It definitely WASN'T connected to the old drive we replaced, but that was a cdrom, not a dvd. Hmmm...

It depends. No sound works, right? Not just from DVDs, but from any file you try to play using different players.
first do what Larissa suggested, than try playing with the cables and/or cards that connect both the DVD burner and the soundcard. My guess is one of them isn't fully inside and that might be the source of the problem (most logical is the soundcard not being perfectly in his slot - but it might be the cable from DVD to soundcard and might be the cable from soundcard to speakers)
Oh and sometimes we, as the 'smart people', miss the simplest things. Check things like power and connection of the speakers.

Checked the power first thing. :D (little light on the speakers is working.

DVD install instructions said to hook up the audio cable, but I couldn't find it. We don't have a separate sound card; it's just the onboard one from the motherboard. I uninstalled the PCI sound drivers and reinstalled them; no change. I'll try opening the box and poking around in there later today, when I have some sunlight.

THanks for the advice!
