Another bear, listed at Etsy. This sad little guy is Bartell. He's got a brand new face, and new footies, too! He wants a new home... (ok, fine, I want 30$ worth of ramen, but still...)

I've got more bears. One that looks like a decrepit old lion, too...

So, in an effort to actually EAT this month, I've started to sell my Second Chance bears.

These are bears I've rescued from second hand stores and remade their faces (and sometimes paws). Their new faces are all wool, and sometimes not as cutesy as they started out...

Here's the first one, Alphonse:

He's listed at Etsy. Even if you don't want him, I'd love comments.

I couldn't resist getting a bit of fic from [info]harusamemosuke , so I obligated myself.

I will write a drabble for the first ten people who comment with one request of 100 words (more or less). In return, they have to can post this in their journal.

These are the fandoms you can choose from:

Harry potter
SGA
Doctor Who
Torchwood
Due South
Hellsing (Heck, silly hollywood movie OR kick ass anime! I'm easy.)

Original fic (give me some kind of prompt)

Other things, if you are reasonably (or unreasonably) sure I'll write them (I wrote Rocky Horror fic, Beatrix potter fic, Disney fic... try me!)

I don't promise I will stick to 100 words, but there ya go.

Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised!

My Code Monkey SGA vid got pulled from youtube.  It's funny; most vids have 'infringing' music AND video... mine just had video. Jonathan Coulton puts most of his music out under a CC license that lets you play with it.

I still have the vid, though.  Guess I use Imeem from now on.

I have bad ram.  How much of a bitch is that?

Computer started 'eating' programs, (like virus protection, TCPIP, and small, unimportant things, like THE BOOT SECTOR), so I think it's a virus (logical, yes?) and scan, but the system keeps shutting down. REALLY shutting down; blink, restart.

I format the whole thing. I lose 80 gigs of media files that I can't burn to disk because the SYSTEM IS RESTARTING. SGA, Dr. Who, Torchwood, SPN, I-man, Smallville (hubbies) and 15 MST3K movies, including Manos, Hands of fate!

GOD DAMNIT.

I spend about 10 hours working on this.

The problem starts up again, not as bad, but...

Look up some stuff, find a ram tester, WHAMO. Instantly. Some part of my ram is blown. Son of a bitch.

On fandom interest.

  • Feb. 11th, 2007 at 2:37 PM
blink
So. Been thinkin' a lot about fandom trends; how one fandom will eat the hearts and minds of fandom at large, and how some fandoms come and go quickly, and how all of this effects the output of fic.

I made a chart. (Yes, yes, I know interest is misspelled. And I know that the vertical axis is mislabeled. The Graph making site is cool, but I didn't catch the errors until after I output it.)

If I look at that chart, and look at the amount of feedback I received (on average), the spikes in feedback pretty well match the spikes in my own reading interest. IE, in 2005, when I posted some chapters of CF, I got 70+ comments, but when I posted in late 2006, I only got 20 or so. Now, some of that is because of the length of time it took me to finish that damned fic, some of it might have been because the latter chapters just weren't as good as the the previous ones, but some of it, I think, was because so many people had stopped having interest in the HP fandom altogether.

Thoughts?

I wish we could make a large, fandom collaboration chart, showing trends in fandom.

For instance, it looks like SGA is starting to burn out (those that burn the brightest?) and Doctor Who/Torchwood is heating up. Some of that, I think, is because the shear mass of GAY that the shows represent; SGA was pretty subtexty, but Torchwood is TEXTY without the sub (unless you count Ianto, who is pretty subby in my eyes.)

Any of you college edumeacated statisticians out there know of a way we can make a chart with lots of people adding data sets?

The Everchanging Book of Names.

  • Dec. 24th, 2006 at 11:06 AM
blink
I know most of us don't need to generate many names because the characters that we use are already named. But when you DO need a name, sometimes it's damn hard to find them. A few people have asked me where I got the names for Corvus Fallere.

Well, I did two things. First, I used the Everchanging Book of Names (Ebon). Ebon is a shareware program that generates names on a template. So what, you say. There's 100,000 of those online.

Yes, but Ebon is diffent. For one, it has MANY, MANY options. There are 'books' of names, grouped by relm, world, region, or historic period. And then, INSIDE those books, there are chapters. Chapters with specific generation patterns.

For instance, in the book "Europe, British Isles" there are the chapters Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Celtic 1, Celtic 1 tribes, English surnames, English/welsh, Gaelic, Irish, Irish surnames, Scottish.

Each chapter can generate an almost unlimitless supply of names. And you can control things like prefexes, suffixes, inital letter, and all sorts of other stuff.

Other books (not a complete list!) )

It's totally cool. Without the registration, you create things one at a time. Afterward, you can make lists of 100. :D

That's how I get a LOT of names.

But for corvus, I did something differnt. For the trio's names, and ALL of the Coraxis, I used this: http://www.zompist.com/numbers.shtml Numbers in over 5000 Languges.

... They were all numbers 1-5. Every one of them. Some of them spelled a bit differetly, but that's what I used.

Ebon is cooler, though.

Hi!

So, i bet you're all wondering where the holy hell the last chapter of Corvus Fallere is, eh?

Well, it's not ready yet. The two wonderful, stupendous women who generaly beat the shit out of my work are either busy or sick or sick and busy, and can't get to it for a while. (I love them anyway. A, Sushi, you guys have done more for my writing than the spellchecker and the eletric typewriter combined!)

I would like, however, to get going on the beta'ed version... which means I need a beta'ed version. Anyone out there who knows Corvus pretty damn well and who would like to really be strong with it, let me know. I'm not a shrinking violet (someday maybe I'll post the stuff that A made me take out... the outtakes are pretty funny.)

It's 24,000 words... anyone want porn for thanksgiving?

Firstly; thank you to everyone who gave me rahrahs for finishing CF. I know it took a long time, and I hope (god I hope) that you all like the ending. Thanks for sticking with me. My final author notes will be long and boring, I'm sure.

Secondly; Tonight I took the ACE test (Adobe Certified Expert). I passed. I'm... incandesent with joy. I've been waiting to take this test for 6 years.

Thirdly; I have a head cold (perhaps knowing that Corvus was done and that I had passed the ACE, my immune system is taking a break?) and am snotty and misirible. (but still incandesent re: #2)

Fourthly; I miss everyone in CA.

Fifthly; I love Portland a lot.

Sixthly: NaNoWriMo is being good to me (see #1) but I'm doing NO writing tonight. Except for this.

Seventhly; I was gonna do the all I want for xmas meam... but i'm too tired to. Maybe tomarrow.

One day before I turn 29, and I'm down to counting pennies so that we can eat food.

But, somehow, I don't mind so much.

We're just getting all the wrinkles out of our finances. We're both employed, but, as new jobs often do, you don't get regular paychecks yet.

So, we're down to ramen.

But, being good Portlanders, being down to ramen means that [info]thesmallprint mixed up some pasta dough, [info]snarkitty chopped some garlic and walked to the store with our counted pennies and bought a chicken breast, and I picked leaves off our houseplant, Basil the Basil (he pronouces Basil in the English manner) and made pesto sauce.

For about 5 dollars, myself, [info]thesmallprint. [info]snarkitty  and [info]djnightgaunt ate fresh made pasta with fresh pesto sauce.

... Man, even being poor in Portland is better.

:)

Other notes:
  • I'm going to write a novella for Juxtipose Fanitsy during Nanowrimo. Not that I won't have to take about another 2 months refining it afterward, but at least it will be a shot in the ass to get started.
  • To do that, I need to finish CF or the guilt will drive me to distraction. So, I'm finishing that this month. I swear.
  • I haven't seen SGA or BSG in months... but I'm addicted to Ouran HighSchool Host Club. It's like... I dunno, slash crack or something.
  • I have DSL at home. This makes me ridiculously happy.
  • ... I miss you, LJ. I might be able to read you more once training is over. We'll see.
That's all for now. [info]djnightgaunt is looking over my shoulder, so I'm going to let him have the computer. There, will that make you happy? Huh? ... Now he thinks I'm making him look bad. He's actually been more fantastic than I have earned. He's wonderful and fantastic and I love him a lot.

And no, he didn't even see that part. He's off cleaning the kitchen.

I love my life.

Hi.

So... um... I haven't been around much.

Started my new job. It requires me to get up early and take the train. This I find cool.

The first night I came home crying. I blame this on dehydration, and not on the fact that my new employer is a soul sucking corporate monster that uses words like "proactive" and "take ownership."

On the other hand, I get to take the ACE test for free... and if I pass it, Adobe gives me the software for free. Yes. Free, legal software. So, the fact that they're paying me... um, not as much as I'd like... is offset by the awesomeness of that.

I miss my friends a lot. Like I'd miss my spleen; I had no idea how important it was untill it wasn't there anymore.  That's you, spleen friends.

My coworkers are cool. One is the son of Chaosium's head guy (or old head guy, i guess) and so is a HUGE Lovecraft freak. The others are: a gaming geekgirl (miniatures) from California who knits, a gaming geekgirl (card and RPG) from Portugal, and a general geekgirl from... here, I guess, who knits LIEK WHOA. Scandinavian mittens. Beautiful.

The rest of us on this team are a mixed bag. One has already left. We call it Survivor Beaverton.

Anyhow, this is just a (long) note to say how much I miss everyone. My internet should be hooked up soon, and then... then the internet really gets fun again.

Getting settled in. Yesterday I sat in a coffehouse untill my butt went numb, then walked my new neiborhood for an hour... and then went into a chocolate house and.... sat untill my butt went numb.

Today? Different coffehouse, same numbutt.

Husband comes in on the plane tomarrow at 11ish am. I'm going to go meet him on the train. I brought all this stuff with me, thinking I'd be bored out of my skull waiting... turns out I sit in coffeehouses untill about 10 pm and then go home and sleep like a dead animal till 10 am. Go fig.

But!

I have written 1000 words of CFII chapter 8. This is the last chapter, and it will be long, but starting it's the hardest part. If I can do 1000 words a day, I'll be good.

The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

Cause of death? Heart attack after being stuck by a stingray, while being filmed. They've even got it on tape.

While this is probably the way he would have wished to go (being in nature, I mean, not cardiac arrest), I am still saddened. He was a larger than life character, and I, for one, will miss him.

Good luck, Steve. Watch out, Saint Peter gets cranky if you poke him with a stick.
